Mullets and Snakes And Remembering Exactly Who You Are
Do you have a photo that REALLY looks like you? Like it somehow captured not just what you look like on the outside, but your entire spirit?
The picture at the top is that photo for me.
I'm in second grade. Standing in the middle of Tamarack Nature Center in White Bear Lake, Minnesota. Holding a snake and looking STRAIGHT at the camera with a smile.
I'm also rocking a mullet. And a perm. Very 1987 😀
I look at this photo and see a girl who knows EXACTLY who she is.
She's neither afraid nor showing off to prove anything. She's bold and adventurous and playful and strong.
She's me.
For awhile, though (like from seventh grade until a few years ago), slow layers built up on top of my truest self.
Layers of the rules I was supposed to play by to be successful and liked. Layers of expectations I put on myself and the world put on me. Layers of hating my body and detaching myself from it. Layers of proving and overdoing and feeling like I had to be successful at everything.
My true spirit still shone through some of the time, but it wasn't completely free.
I always knew there was more inside of me that wanted to get out.
Letting go of overdoing and perfectionism and reconnecting to my true inner voice let me do that. There's still some spirit-loosening to do, but I feel more like me than I've felt since sixth grade.
This is why my book title includes the phrase "and live your truth."
Because it's not just about letting go of proving, pleasing, and perfecting.
It's also about reconnecting to YOU. To your truest nature, to your desires, to your internal freedom.
If you have even an inkling that this is selfish, I want you to stop right there.
The world changes when you own your desires and stop playing by the rules you've been taught.
If you're ready to let go of overdoing and perfectionism - and RECLAIM yourself, then you can start your journey today by reading An Overachiever’s Guide To Breaking The Rules or scrolling to the bottom of this page and subscribing to my email list to get all the updates of offerings to help you move forward.
In the meantime, go find that picture where your spirit shines through. Put it up somewhere visible. Let it remind you of who you really are.
