How To Say No At Work

Well, it happened again. The lesson the universe keeps teaching me over and over and OVER.

SAY. NO. MORE. OFTEN.

Yep, that's it. I would love for this lesson to sink deep into my soul and lodge there for the rest of eternity, but it seems my learning curve is a little flatter than I'd prefer on this one.

Here's my pattern: I say yes. Usually with enthusiasm! Often I even slow down and reflect before I say yes. I think I have the capacity (this is part of problem - I trick myself into thinking I have greater capacity than I actually do), so I dive in.

And then in midst of actually doing all my yeses, I find myself exhausted. I wake up in the middle of the night thinking of everything I need to get done. My brain gets foggy. My creativity goes out the window. I have little energy to be proactive because I'm constantly in "get-er-done" mode. I also crave carbs and an evening drink like you wouldn't believe.

I know I'm not alone here - especially when it comes to work.

Every person I talk to right now feels overloaded.

You have more meetings on your calendar than ever before. Tons of people are leaving jobs, which means there's open positions that need to be back-filled and work that still needs to be completed. There are supply chain shortages all over the place. And most people have some level of burnout from the cumulative effects of the last 18 months - and we know women are feeling that burnout even more.

Which means it's even more important to set boundaries.

I know it can feel IMPOSSIBLE to say no at work.

I have the energy to show up with everything I am to my work and relationships and hobbies. I have the space to listen to my own knowing. This is the way I want to live my life...even if I need to learn the lesson a few more times over
